Full Description

In mid December 1938, tests were made with the existing steam siren at the Gas Works as a possible air-raid siren in the event of war. It was quite common for existing sirens on industrial sites to be adopted in this way - especially before Home Office electric sirens became available. In mid 1939 it was proposed that the Gas Works be provided with a new steam siren; it is not yet clear whether this was approved.
