Full Description

Around mid February 1943 plans were made for an air-raid siren for the village of Herne, to supplement the existing siren on the Water Tower on Mickleburgh Hill. The local Vicar gave his permission for the siren to be fixed to the roof of the Parochial Institute. The site was considered suitable, being ‘near a Warden’s Post [at the Vicarage next door], thus enabling the siren to be manually operated in the event of the remote control breaking down.’ It also satisfied the technical requirement that the siren be ‘sited in the vicinity of the transformer station.’ The expenditure was approved in January 1944 and the siren was installed the following month.
