South West of Herne Common village there was a Second World War camp for German prisoners-of-war. The prisoners were engaged on agricultural work under the Kent War Agricultural Executive Committee; ‘Nissen huts were used for accommodation and cooking, [the prisoners] really looked after themselves.’
