Full Description

In late 1943, the contingent of Royal Engineers (under DCRE Eastry) who had been assigned to Barham occupied ‘Eagle Gate Lodge’, on the Dover Road, at the north-east corner of Broome Park. (During the Second World War, Broome Park seems to have been densely occupied (especially during 1943), perhaps because the house had been vacant at the outbreak.) Immediate post-war aerial photographs show an unusual track to the west of the lodge, in a wooded tract adjoining the road which bounds Broome Park on its northern side. Short branches, in pair lead off the track to the north- and south-east, every 20 to 30m. This arrangement (vehicle standings?) may well be wartime, and survives to date. The Lodge itself is also extant.
