Full Description

According to the school website, when the school reopened after the holidays, on 19 September 1939, it was attended only by evacuees from Gillingham and Rochester. Around the middle of November 1940 the Bridge-Blean Rural District Council received plans of the new air raid shelters at Barham Church of England School. Judging by a historic photograph reproduced on the school website, the shelters were brick-built with flat, reinforced concrete roofs, and were placed hard-up at the back (or side?) of the mid nineteenth-century school house. By the start of December 1940 there were also public trench shelters at Barham, but it has not been possible to determine their exact location.
