Full Description

A list of defence works to be cleared after the Second World War at Bekesbourne included what was called a: ‘Road-block under Long Arch leading to Garrington.’ This must presumably have been the brick-lined culvert carrying the Nailbourne under the London, Chatham, Dover Railway, which here formed part of the Dover, Canterbury, Whitstable Stop Line; these therefore formed part of the stop line defences. Because this was not a ‘road’ as such the ‘blocks’ do not feature on the 1940 list of road blocks; it would nonetheless have seemed very necessary to block this passage under the railway. Early in the war there was a plan to sandbag this tunnel to provide an air-raid shelter for Bekesbourne Village School, but this was rejected in favour of sandbagging, and wiring the windows of, the school building.
