Monument record TR 15 SE 237 - Second World War pillbox near the north-west corner of Charlton Park, beside Roman Road, Bishopsbourne

There was a Second World War pillbox near the north-west corner of Charlton Park, beside Roman Road. This was a pillbox near the north-west corner of Charlton Park, probably concealed in the estate’s wooded margin. It was pillbox No.104 in the 1940 list of pillboxes in East Kent (2 December); it was in Sector 3 of the area, at the stated Military Grid reference R 635707 It was clearly associated with a road block on the Roman Road from Dover to Canterbury (now part of the A2 locally) and probably faced south-east towards this obstruction, as an outlying defence on the approach to the City. Oddly, the CBA Defence of Britain Project (see sources) record a pillbox at clearly this location as being ‘built into [a] railway viaduct’ and forming part of the Dover, Canterbury, Whitstable Stop Line; this is likely an error.
