An ‘Air Ministry Experimental’ (i.e. RADAR) installation at ‘Cutballs Farm’, Blean, is mentioned as a Vulnerable Point in a document of January 1941. As such, various defensive features would doubtless have been dug and/or constructed to provide for a military guard. An instruction of May the same year orders a communication cable to be laid from the station to the headquarters of 130 Brigade at Sturry. One Military Grid Reference (R 566797) places the station at what is now, and also seems in the 1930s, to have been known as ‘Arbele Farmhouse’ (a Grade II Listed Building); perhaps ‘Cutballs’ recalls an earlier name for this farm? Another reference (R 570790) places the station near where a track from the farm meets Tyler Hill Road about 800m south-by-south-east of the former reference - there are, indeed, some slightly suspicious features evident here in immediate post-war aerial photographs.
