Full Description

This is a brick-shuttered Type 28 anti-tank pillbox, which today stands in the garden of The Bungalow, Honey Hill, Blean, south of Honey Hill Farm, adjoining a track leading west from Honey Hill. The main embrasure faces north west, across a track, and past the end of a hedge, which would have provided some cover. It faces directly a probable road block near the bend of Denstroude Lane. Immediate post-war aerial photographs clearly show a pitched-roof sitting on top of the pillbox as a disguise - its ridge aligned north-east to south west (i.e. transverse to the direction of fire). The adjacent dwelling known as ‘The Bungalow’ had not yet been built. This pillbox must have been paired with a nearby brick-shuttered Type 24 pillbox (80m to the west down the said track). They were, together, enclosed within an irregular polygonal earthwork, extending to the north west (direction of fire) and enclosing an area about 15000 square metres. The pillbox is well preserved but has been whitewashed and otherwise altered internally, and is overgrown; the ‘roof’ does not survive.
