By late 1941, in the event of an invasion, the road bridge carrying Pett Bottom Road over the Elham Valley Railway was intended to be demolished to provide an obstacle to enemy vehicles. Such detonations were planned on several bridges up and down this railway. This particular bridge fell on a stretch of the line which had formed part of the partially executed Canterbury-to-Lynsore Court Grid Line of 1940. The village of Bridge, to the north-east, was a Category ‘A’ Nodal Point, and this may also have formed part of its defences. The bridge may have been mined ready for detonation, it was ‘demolished’ during the GreatBinge practice exercise of late 1941.
