Full Description

[TR 13753871] Banked enclosure, 150 by 60 paces. (1) Enclosure and building shown on sheet and named "Shrine or Suringe". (2) Enclosure visible. (3) [Field centred: TR 13733870] Fishpond Meadow [TR 13893820] Shrine (4) A short distance S of Postling Church on the other side of what was the village common, stands a small building called Shrine Farm beside an old bridle path. There is strong reason for supposing that it was one of the recognised houses of rest for Canterbury pilgrims landing at any of the ports of SE Kent. (5) The retaining banks of the fishpond have been almost ploughed out but can still be traced, giving the feature a length of about 140.0m and a width of about 45.0m. The pond lay alongside a stream which flowed around the S and W sides. The Postling Tithe Map (Authy 4) shows 'Shrine' as the small building at TR 13893820 on the OS 6" Prov. It no longer exists. The `F.P.', running SE-NW, 90.0m to the N of it is clearly a Bridle Road. (6)
