This roadblock, based on Shalmsford Bridge over the River Stour, which was prepared for demolition, had been established, in case of invasion, by late November 1941. This stretch of River Stour was adopted as a kind of ‘Stop Line’ line in early 1941, and numerous bridge demolitions were prepared over the following months. In February 1942 a platoon from the 132 Infantry Brigade was assigned for the protection of this bridge.
