Full Description

(TR 1438). A small Saxon brooch with keystone garnets and a pair of belt rivets were found at Postling in 1773. (1) Postling. Inhumation burial. Unlocated. 1733 - A small gilt brooch with Keystone garnets and a pair of shoe-shaped studs were evidently found at Postling, and were in Faussett's collection but C.R Smith knew nothing of their discovery. (2) An exact pair of keystone disc brooches 2.6cm in diameter, in gilded silver, are recorded from Postling. These are classified by Avent as corpus No.33 and 34. They were in Faussett's (a) collection, and were probably discovered in 1773, but the exact provenance is unknown. They are presently in the City of Liverpool Museum, Access No. M7351 - corpus No 33; Access No. M7375 - corpus No. 34. (3) A study was undertaken of the wafer-thin pieces of cross-hatched gold foil used as backings for garnet and glass settings on Anglo-Saxon jewellery of the C6th and C7th. The two brooches from Postling were used in this study. The line directionon the foils of the Postling brooches was upstanding, as opposed to forming grooves and the number of lines and and decoration was exactly the same on each. (4)
