Full Description
St Augustine’s Mental Hospital, a sizeable Victorian Asylum overlooking Chartham village, was adopted for use as an emergency hospital during the Second World War, although it is not yet clear whether it sawe use in this capacity. One wing of the hospital was converted for use as a military hospital. The hospital laundry provided the steam for the Chartham air-raid siren, in the form of a hooter (estimated one-and-a-half horsepower). By early September 1941 there was an air-raid siren fixed at the hospital laundry – where there was, of course, an ample supply of steam. At that time it was suggested that a more powerful siren be installed. This was agreed the following June, and a four horsepower electric siren had been installed by mid September.
