In mid May 1940, ‘C’ Company of the 9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers occupied premises known as ‘Oakdene’, on King Street, Fordwich. The battalion headquarters were in the nearby George and Dragon public house. The battalion moved on at the end of the month (‘C’ Company went to defend Chislet Colliery, Westbere) but the premises may conceivably have continued in military use. (Indeed, this may have been fortified house No. 5 (Military Grid Reference R 521779) in a list of such structures made 2 December 1940; alternatively, the said fortified house may have been nearer the junction with Fordwich Road, where it could better have defended Fordwich Bridge.)
