Full Description
By late May 1942 there was a heavy anti-aircraft artillery emplacement ‘at Mote Hill Fordwich.’ This was in the vicinity of Mote Road on higher ground overlooking Fordwich; it was probably in a large field between Moat Lane and Well Lane, south-west of the village. (In late April 1941, flame traps or fougasses were proposed within declivities on both of the said roads (at Military Grid References R 621775 and R 622776 respectively) but it is not clear whether these were actually installed, and it is perhaps unlikely that the said anti-aircraft emplacement yet existed at that date). Between 20 May and 22 June 1942, the emplacement is known to have comprised four 3.7 inch guns, directed by GL Mk II radar. Judging by its location, it could plausibly, at least in part, have been intended to defend the large ammunition depot in Trenley Park Wood to the east (a military Vulnerable Point), although it is perhaps also likely had a significant role in the defence of Canterbury.
