Full Description

Alcroft Grange, secluded in the edge of Little Hall Wood, beside a track to the east of Tyler Hill, was occupied by a succession of Army units during the Second World War. In mid may 1940, the ‘C’ and ‘D’ Companies of the 9 Royal Fusiliers had headquarters at Alcroft Grange. ‘C’ Company thereafter moved-on to Fordwich, but ‘D’ Company remained for a time even beyond the end of May 1940 when the rest of the battalion was relocated. Part of the Royal Engineers(?) – described as ‘Ord Field Park’ - moved to Alcroft Grange for a time in late February 1941; and late in 1943 the East Kent Home Guard Transport Column, one of the ‘Kent Home Guard Utility Battalions’ was stationed here.
