Relatively detailed information survives about one stretch of the defences of Canterbury Fortress’ Inner Perimeter, where this coincided with the north-east boundary of St John’s School (now Kingsmead County Primary School). This comes from a detailed plan illustrating a proposed demolition, in an appendix to the 1941 Fortress Defence Scheme. It may reflect the defensive arrangements in place elsewhere on this perimeter. The school building itself was in civil-defence use as an emergency hospital, but the playground on this side was taken over for military purposes. Two lines of barbed wire fencing were erected outside the existing brick playground wall, behind which, three or more weapon positions were built-up with sandbags. There was a plan, in the event of an invasion for the greenhouses to the north-east of the playground to be demolished, by the Royal engineers, clear the lines of fire from these positions. In the 1942 Defence Scheme these positions were marked as weapon pits.
