By the end of 1940, the 4th (St Augustine’s) Battalion of the Kent Home Guard, operating in much of Canterbury District, north of the city, adopted, as their headquarters, the old drill hall - today known as the Westgate Hall - which stands close-by, and parallel to, St Peter’s Lane. They remained there for much of, perhaps throughout, the war. The utilitarian brick drill hall has been extensively altered inside and out, to serve as a venue for a variety of events, and it is now hard to appreciate its former character. The exterior has been thickly pebbledashed.
