Full Description

Heppington House, a large house in extensive grounds on the west side of Faussett Hill, Nackington, was occupied by a succession of military units during the Second World War. 358 Battery of the 90 Field Regiment Royal Artillery moved here on 22 May 1940 and established headquarters. ‘D’ Troop and ‘E’ Troop were stationed here with two 25/18 pounders and two 4.5" howitzers, respectively. Inevitably, defensive features will have been erected or excavated in the grounds. This battery moved out on 21 February 1941. A petrol cache, here, was guarded by a contingent of the 5 Dorset Regiment early in May of that year, and later that month ‘A’ Company of the 1/7 Queens took up residence. In late 1943, the 511 Field Park Company of the Royal Engineers were here, followed by 204 Field Company Royal Engineers in November.
