Full Description
There was a Second World War pillbox near the north-east corner of St Martin’s Hospital. This was pillbox No.2 in the 1940 list of pillboxes in East Kent; it was in Sector 7 of the area, at the stated Military Grid reference R 612758. On immediate post-war aerial photographs one can see what looks like a hexagonal pillbox outside the grounds of St Martin’s Hospital, St Martin’s Hill, Canterbury. By this time the pillbox was flanked, to north and south, by small buildings - if these had been here during wartime they would have restricted the field of fire, but it could still have covered a good stretch of Bekesbourne Lane. There doesn’t seem to be anything on the site today.
