Full Description

From c.1940 there was a Second World War anti-aircraft battery on the golf course at Old Park. The battery is thought to have been manned by Canadians. According to Peter Hill there were five or six guns in concrete bunkers, and a searchlight. By about1941 German intelligence were aware of the battery (It may have been bombed?). In late May 1942 there is reference to a ZAA (Rocket anti-aircraft artillery) battery (‘CN4’) at the ‘Golf course’, with ‘six U9P guns [and] no radar’ - was this the same site? According to John Herbert (pers. comm.) part of the foundations of the anti-aircraft battery survive in the vicinity of the fourth hole. Immediate post-war aerial photographs show plausible structures, along with a group of hut like objects (accommodation?) nearby on the Stodmarsh Road - two of the latter may survive.
