Full Description

During the Second World War, two howitzers, left over from the First World War were installed in the Dane John Gardens - near the bandstand, probably just to the north. Sources differ as to the date when these were installed, one source recalls, on 10 May 1939, visiting the park and seeing ‘two 9.2 [inch] Howitzers being emplaced near to the entrance of the Dane John’. Another source suggests they were brought here in 1940 which would agree with post-war signage on a nearby ‘shell shelter’; and with the tradition that the guns were fired once, in that year, causing considerable consternation locally, and then removed.
