Full Description
By late 1941, the Imperial Communications Canterbury Telephone Repeater Station, a vital component in Canterbury’s civil and military communications, had been made a Canterbury Fortress defended locality, with weapon pits flanking the entrance from Orchard Street. It was ‘to be held without withdrawal by a special GPO unit of the Kent Home Guard: ‘B’ Company 25 (36 GPO) Kent Home Guard’. In late April 1942 it was listed as a Type 3 Vulnerable Point. Vulnerable Points were ‘factories, establishments or installations [which were considered] important to the national war effort’. This was a Type 3 Vulnerable Point, not considered a likely air-raid target, but to be provided with an anti-sabotage guard by members of the civil police.
