Full Description
In late April 1942 the Canterbury Gas and Water Company Waterworks, on Wincheap Street, were listed as a Type 4 Vulnerable Point. Vulnerable Points were ‘factories, establishments or installations [which were considered] important to the national war effort’. Type 4 points were ‘not considered a likely air-raid target, but to be provided with an anti-sabotage guard by ... Home Guard or armed watchmen in the employment of the establishment concerned’. In mid may 1943 the waterworks were included in a list of ‘additional’ defended localities outside the Outer Perimeter of the Canterbury Fortress. The site was to be reconnoitred and a plan drawn up for its defence. The extraordinary buildings housing the waterworks have, sadly, since been demolished.
