Full Description
In the 1941 Canterbury Fortress Defence Scheme, the ‘Mobilization Store’ (Military Grid Reference R 601771), just outside the outer perimeter of the Canterbury Fortress, on Sturry Road (opposite Riverdale Road) was assigned as a Forward Post. From immediate post-war aerial photographs, this looks to have been a small, square enclosure fronting the Sturry Road, adjoining the northernmost corner of the Cavalry Barracks. This enclosure no longer exists. The northernmost of two small buildings (since demolished) flanking the entrance was prepared as a fortified house, and there was another at the eastern corner of the compound (fronting Old Park Avenue). Two weapon pits- perhaps sandbagged enclosures - were constructed behind its north-eastern boundary. From all of these emplacements fire was directed north eastwards, along the Sturry Road and its south-eastern flank. This Forward Post will have strengthened defences along this approach to the Fortress; the Store itself may also have been of logistical significance.
