Full Description

One of the buildings of Wincheap Primary School seems to have been adopted as a ‘fortified house’ (not necessarily a domestic building) by November 1940. Teaching, at this time, may have been relocated to Church Lane, St Mildred’s (was the school being renovated at the outbreak of war?). This was fortified house No. 36 (Military Grid Reference R 583749) in a list of such structures made 2 December that year. Fire may well have been directed roughly southwards, across the fields; this was one of a string of fortified houses defending Canterbury’s southern edge.
