Full Description
A building on or near the Lime Works at the south end of Lime Kiln Road (Military Grid Reference R 587748) had been adopted as a ‘fortified house’ by November 1940. This was fortified house No. 34 in a list of such structures made 2 December that year. There was a nearby bridge across the Elham Valley Railway Line (which may, locally, have been prepared as a secondary defensive line west of the Dover, Canterbury, Whitstable Stop Line) and this may explain the location. This was one of a string of fortified houses defending Canterbury’s southern edge.
