Full Description
Some building (Military Grid Reference R 591749) belonging to the Canterbury Public Assistance Institution and its associated hospital (later Nunnery Fields Hospital, and now redeveloped for housing) had been adopted as a fortified house by November 1940. This was fortified house No. 30 in a list of such structures made 2 December that year. These institutions had important civil-defence roles during the Second World War; the ‘fortified house’ (not necessarily a domestic building) was probably only a small part of the complex (perhaps an ancillary building?). This was one of a string of fortified houses defending Canterbury’s southern edge.
