By mid September 1941, probably as part of the strengthening of the Canterbury Fortress, a fortified house had been established in a building on the west side of Northgate (either No. 54 or 56?), opposite the end of High Street St Gregory’s, with a clear line of fire down the latter. This house lay more-or-less on the Inner Perimeter of the Fortress, which, having stepped out to encompass St John’s School (to the west), ran down St John’s Lane and Northgate to get back to the line of the old City Wall.
