Full Description
By mid September 1941, probably as part of the strengthening of the Canterbury Fortress, a fortified house had been established in a building (since demolished) at the Canterbury Electricity Works, adjoining Kingsmead Road; fire would have been directed westwards. As an essential utility, the Works had been provided with extensive civil-defence measures; was this fortified house perhaps intended, in part, to help protect the city’s electricity supply? Its principal function was undoubtedly to cover the roadblock on the Kingsmead Bridge on the Outer Perimeter of the Fortress. There may have been a machine-gun emplaced here (an erroneous Military Grid reference is given for this weapon in the 1941 Defence Scheme and the only emplacement shown at the Electricity Generating Station in the accompanying plan is this fortified house).
