Full Description
In 2004 an archaeological survey recorded a number of earthworks associated with Leybourne Mill, a post-medieval and possible medieval watermill. Two areas were surveyed and earthwork features were recorded in both.
Five earthwork features were found in area 'A:
Feature 1: a broad, flat bottomed ditch, c. 2 m wide (the main mill leat)
Feature 2: an irregular depression 2 m wide (possible watering area for cattle)
Feature 3: a bank or ditch adjacent to Feature 1.
Feature 4: a low irregular mound with an adjacent irregular bank (possible upcast from Feature 5)
Feature 5: sinuous and relatively irregular ditch 1.3 m wide (modern drain)
Area B
Feature 6: a high steep slope, possibly augmented (possibly natural but augmented)
Feature 7: an irregular stream channel with two arms
Feature 8: island between stream channel 7
Feature 9: low irregular mound, possible upcast
Feature 10: linear depression carrying small informal footpath
Feature 11: mouth of the channel where it joins the Leybourne stream
No significant finds or features were discovered in the watching brief (1)
