Full Description
At the nW end of trench 1 there was anl defined cut with a sub-rectangular outline on the SE which measured 1.5m by 1.25 (at least). This feature continued beyond the NE and SW limits of the trench. A narrow trench cut this feature on a NE to SW alignment. This was filled with brick fragments and part of a glass blown window pane. The original feature was also cut elsewhere on the SW side. This second cut was 2.4m long by .45m wide. Near the centre of the trench was another 'discrete' feature, circular in shape with a diameter of 0.6m. This contained a fill of largely chalk rubble blocks and red brick rubble set in a matrix of grey clay silt. Two small features were noted in the North section. The first of these contained a peg tile and modern paint tins.
Trench 2. Iron Age pottery and a single sherd of medieval pottery were found as well as snail shells and grape pips. This deposit was sealed by .25m of gery clay containing small rounded flints and flecks of chalk and charcoal. This mixture suggests some contamination, possibly hillwash derived from stratrigraphy further uphill. Grape pips might be either of medieval date or modern contamination.
Group of 18 sherd unabraded fragments in a red-brown to dark grey fabric of Iron Age date. The other sherd was from an early medieval jug in a light gery sandy fabric, with knife slashed decoration on the outside. (1)
