Full Description
In 2003 a borehole survey was carried out to discover if important late glacial (Allerod/Windermere interstadial) soils survived at the site as indicated by previous fieldwork. 40 boreholes were excavated but only 2 produced evidence of the soil.
From the report: "An array of 40 boreholes was undertaken to depths of up to 4m along eight transects. These were laid out to encompass the 'Allerod' soil recorded in the two earlier geotechnical test-pits. The boreholes showed the 'Allerod' soil to survive extremely patchily (in two locations) and to be of very limited extent within the survey area..as well as being rather mixed or poorly developed. None of the three exposures recorded in the borehole survey was considered to be of sufficient quality to merit further investigation by excavation. Instead it is proposed that such investigation should be undertaken approximately 1 km to the west, in advance of quarrying, where the Allerod soil is more extensive and better preserved, thereby offering a much greater potential for the recovery of artefacts and associated Late Glacial environmental information."
