Building record TR 13 SE 2 - Martello Tower No. 13

Summary

A Geogian in date Martello tower, number 13, which was built in 1805 as part of the coastal defence system against an invasion from Napoleonic France. It is situated on the sea front at the western end of West Parade, Hythe. The tower was radically altered in its conversion to a dwelling house in around 1928. The exterior is painted white and with its large picture windows and surrounding wall (in matching white) it is almost unrecognisable as a Martello tower. The building was used as an observation post during World War II and by 1972 had been altered once more when it reverted to use as a private residence.
