Full Description
Second World War mortuary at the former Gravesend Corporation yard, set back from the south side of Old Road West, Gravesend, Kent. This was designed and built at the beginning of the Second World War for the holding of the corpses of local victims of air raids, prior to identification and burial. It is located next to the Old Road West public cemetery. It is a rectangular single storey brick structure with a corrugated roof, containing a large space for the holding of up to 50 bodies. There is a viewing area for bodies, an office, toilet and shower accommodation. A smaller outbuilding within the yard may have had some related use. It is not yet known whether the mortuary was a recipient of corpses but the building is likely to have been decommissioned at the end of the Second World War and at an unknown later date became a workshop. It is now in private ownership and has suffered the demolition of its eastern end. (1)
