Full Description
In March 2009 the Wealden Iron Research Group carried out a walkever survey of Strawberry Wood and New Barn Shaw, Benenden. They concluded that some iron slag found in a stream in Strawberry Wood was probably washed out of the footings of a culvert. In New Barn Shaw, however, they found a small clay extraction quarry (exact location unknown) and two probable bloomery sites. The first contained bloomery furnace slag and was at the top of a steep bank east of the stream, running for c. 15 m. The second was also east of the stream on a 2m-high platform. Tap slag was found among furnace slag and possible roasted ore. The slag heap here covered an area c. 10m x 15m. (1)
