Full Description

A 30m long trench was excavated that was 0.4 m wide and 0.6 m deep. It led to a 2m x 2m square soakaway. A number of features were observed. A series of dumps were seen in the soakaway, a small modern pit was observed in the western end of the service trench and the remains of two post medieval brick structures were seen in the trench together with a more recent brick foundation.

The brick buildings provide evidence of the development of the site. The date of the bricks (18th/19th century) suggests that they are contemporary with the occupation of the site by the Cornwallis family, builders and owners of the Castle Farmhouse in 1855. The structures seem to relate to new types of greenhouse, built to house exotic plants. Evidence of the use of boilers in the garden was also found in the form of clinker. (1)
