Full Description

The excavation involved digging nine trenches in Greyfriars Gardens. These trenches uncovered a large wall dated to the late 15th to early 16th centuries and several medieval metallings as well a range of finds from the Roman period to the present day. In addition to this a layer of rubble was also detected. It is thought that this rubble layer dates to the dissolution of the monasteries when the buildings of the existing Franciscan Friary were either sold off or destroyed. Evidence of the sites later use as a garden was also recovered. The small finds across the site mostly consist of pottery including Roman material as well as Medieval, Tudor, and Modern finds. Bone, glass and iron finds were also recorded.(1)
