Full Description

Area B was a portion of the Grain-Shorne pipeline situated on a low hill immediately to the west of Upper Stoke excavated in 2009.

A Late Bronze Age enclosure had a boundary ditch made up from now truncated segments. It was up to 1.4m wide and 0.2m deep with uneven sides and base. Within the enclosure there were a number of pits with Late Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age and Early Iron Age pottery. Numerous small pits were located around the outside of the enclosure. These pits contained briquetage suggesting salt production was occurring on the site or nearby. No hearths were found on the site. Two semi-complete jars were placed in one pit. They had potentially been whole when deposited and truncated by later activity. This possibly represents a ritual deposit associated with the salt manufacturing activity.

Two pits dated to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age suggesting limited activity at this time on the site. In the Middle Iron Age a new enclosure was laid out. It extended beyond the limits of the excavation and was at least 70m long. A number of small pits and a gully were cut into the side of the ditch. The enclosure had gone out of use by the 1st century AD. (1-2)
