Full Description

A desk-based assessment suggested that a mill mentioned in the Domesday entry for Chatham could have been located in the vicinity of Gun Wharf.

A map of 1633 shows a mill and two mill ponds on the site. It is thought to have been a tide mill making use of retained water via means of a sluice. The mill is depicted on early 18th century maps but the land was acquired by the Ordnance Office shortly after this time and the site included in Gun Wharf (1)
