Full Description
A one by one metre Test Pit was dug in the garden just to the north of the main Almshouse block. It was excavated in 30 cm spits to a depth of 0.8 metres, at which point the undisturbed nature of the brickearth deposit indicated that the natural deposits had been reached. Four blade type worked flints were found at depths of between 30 and 70 cm in the brickearth layer. Small amounts of stressed flint, struck flakes and rough core nodule fragments were also found in association. The form of the blades suggests Mesolithic or Neolithic activity at this spot (1).
