Monument record TR 13 SE 16 - Saltwood Heights Battery 1798

Summary

The site of a Georgian battery known as Saltwood Heights Battery was built in 1798 and mounted two 24-pounder guns. No features were visible on aerial photographs and no battery is marked on the historic Ordnance Survey maps, though the layout of probable associated barracks is shown south of Saltwood on the First Series Ordnance Survey Map of 1816.

Full Description

TR 155349. Saltwood Heights Battery, 1798 having 2 x 24 pounders. (1) The battery referred to above (Source 1) was not visible on aerial photographs viewed as part of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey NMP. No battery is marked on the historic Ordnance Survey maps (1816, 1883, 1889, 1907), though the layout of a probable associated barracks is shown south of Saltwood and north of Hythe at TR 1580 35233 on the First Series Ordnance Survey Map of 1816. The area is now occupied by housing. (2)
