Full Description
At a depth of one metre in a two by two metre test pit (TP36), an undisturbed yard surface of large and medium sized flints was found. Just above, below and within the flint layer were substantial amounts of medieval and late medieval pottery, mostly of Tyler Hill manufacture. This included a fragment of roof finial. To the north, the yard bordered on a rubbish pit complex contaiining yet more medieval material. A slot taken down onto the base of TP36, once the courtyard deposits had been cleared, revealed a sparse scatter iof flints at a depth of 1.35 metres. This was set into otherwise undisturbed brickearth with no finds other than a large lump of iron workig slag. This scatter could not be dated but was 35 cm below the medieval flint yard surface. Another small pit (TP37) excavated 10 metres to the west in the same garden revealed a complex of rubbish pits at a depth of 80-90cm with a content almost entirely 17th to mid 18th century, for example near complete Delft and early English Delft plates. This small pit also yielded a residiual Roman die and gaming counter.(1)
