Full Description

At a depth of around half a metre in two small scale excavations (TPs 12 and 29) and one larger trench (TP27), a silty clay layer was revealed which contained many small highly abraded pottery fragments along with abraded animal bone and shell. With the larger pit, located in between the house gardens and the Almshouse precinct, the pottery included a high proportion of early medieval North Kent shelly ware. TPs 29 and 27 also contained the foundations of a terrace of 19th century weatherboard cottages, (demolished as unfit for human habitation in the 1950s. These remains were associated with 19th to 20th century finds such as a gas mantle and spark plug. . Unusually for this part of Faversham very little post medieval archaeology was found, probably because the land was used for orchard during this period.
