Full Description

During an archaeological evaluation at Rochester Library and Medway Adult Education Centre, Eastgate, Rochester, Kent in 2005 deposits dating to the Roman period were encountered.

At the base of one of the two evaluation trenches a deposit containing Roman pottery with a main date range of AD 50/100-150. Fragments of later Roman pottery were found and it is thought that the deposit therefore dates to sometime in the 2nd century AD. This deposit was often immediately below post-medieval and modern deposits, suggesting an undisturbed Roman land surface, one not subjected to medieval pit digging or other cutting activities.

Cutting or overlying this deposit was a burnt clay area. Taken in association with fragments of slag found in the evaluation, this may represent industrial activity on the site dating to the Roman period.

The area was covered in thick post-medieval and modern deposits. (1)
