Full Description
Hythe mint. It was always very small and minted at irregular intervals, particularly before 1066. It had replaced the mint at Lympne, and opened with Edward Confessor's 'small flan' type c1048. Only one moneyer, Edred, is known from Norman times and coins of the Hythe mint are the rarest of all the Kent mints. The first Norman coins from Hythe date from c1077, followed by a break until 1086, after which production was consistent until 1100. All five types of William II were produced, the mint closing at the end of his reign in 1100. The Hythe mint shared one obverse die of William I with Canterbury, which is an interesting die-link.
