Full Description

Investigation and watching brief prior to and during construction of John Wesley School, Ashford, 2006. During previous excavation at the site assessment found features thought to relate to a 12th-14th century farmstead on the site (1). No evidence of medieval settlement was found in this study, however, instead evidence of settlement may be located near to the excavation site, possibly beneath an area already under construction prior to commencing archaological assessment. Two flint flakes were found, believed to be prehistoric in origin, but not evidence of prehistoric settlement at the site. Some pottery was found in field ditches (c.1175-1400 AD), which were probably part of a medieval field system. A possible medieval trackway was also found. Several lines of field drains noted, probably of late 19th or 20th C date.(2)
