Full Description

Post-medieval drain and potential walls- A post-medieval brick-vaulted drain and two later potential walls, one of brick the other of mixed Caen stone, chalk, flint and brick, were identified. The brick-vaulted drain was stratigraphically the earliest, and cut through an earlier subsoil. The drain, formed of unfrogged bricks bonded with a sandy lime mortar, was aligned north to south and had an observed width of 0.60 m and survived at a depth of 0.56 m below the existing ground surface. Although only a short segment of the drain was exposed, it appeasers to be a continuation of the brick-vaulted drain identified during previous archaeological monitoring. The upper course of drain was traversed by a single course of unfrogged bricks 0.51 m wide, bonded in the same sandy lime mortar, but aligned east to west. This potential wall survived at a depth of 0.41 m below the existing ground surface. (1)
