Full Description

A watching brief by Canterbury Archaeological Trust found the foundations of stone steps still in situ at a depth of between 0.16 m and 0.88 m below the existing ground surface level. The stair foundation was formed of three footings or piers, constructed of roughly dressed Caen stone and rag stone blocks capped by brick, originally forming a plate or seat for the stone steps. The bricks were standard 0.21 m by 0.11 m. unfrogged stock, and were lain in three stepped courses. (1)
